History of GTH

A Tradition of Excellence

In 1894 Elmer M. Hayden opened a law office in downtown Tacoma. His practice later merged with firms founded by Joseph H Gordon and Scott Z. Henderson. Together, they formed the core of what has become one of the largest, most active law firms in the Pacific Northwest.

Today, Gordon Thomas Honeywell has over 50 attorneys and maintains offices in the heart of both Tacoma's and Seattle's business districts. We are proud to practice with some of the best attorneys in the business. In fact, in recent years, a substantial number of firm members have been honored with a variety of prestigious awards. These include regular listings of our attorneys in "The Best Lawyers in America," recognition of our attorneys as Washington Super Lawyers and Rising Stars in "Washington Law & Politics" magazine, two "Trial Lawyer of the Year" awards from the Washington State Trial Lawyers Association, and similar accolades.

A Philosophy of Hard Work

Although the firm has necessarily evolved since its inception in response to changes in the law and society, one thing has remained the same: Our philosophy.

We provide exceptional legal services to a diversified clientele at a reasonable cost. All of our attorneys are working attorneys. Each of our associates is expected to become a partner. They are pursuing a long-term relationship, so they work harder and with more care. Decisions they make are in the best interests of the client. They do it because they are committed to their work, and to you.

You notice this dedication the moment you begin working with us. We take a personal interest in you. If you have a question, we will answer it. If you don't understand something, we will explain it. You are the reason we are here.

By keeping in close contact with you and consulting with other firm members, we can ensure you are well represented. We work on current developments in the law, and we can anticipate changes in the law that may affect you.

Our firm has the experience and depth to handle complicated legal matters, but we are small enough to provide these services in a way that is both personal and dedicated.

We Make the Community an Area of Practice

For over a century, Gordon Thomas Honeywell attorneys have made significant contributions to the profession and the community.

Our members have gone on to become a state attorney general, Pierce County prosecuting attorney, many superior court judges, Washington Supreme Court judges, and two U.S. District Court judges. Our attorneys have also included three presidents and three members of the Board of Governors of the Washington State Bar Association. Firm members in the past have become United States Congressmen, and officers of the American Bar Association.

Our firm and its members have devoted time and energy to many community organizations including the Tacoma Art Museum, Point Defiance Zoo Society, Western Washington University Board, Tacoma Symphony, Greater Tacoma Community Foundation, Seattle Art Museum, Pierce County Sexual Assault Center, KBTC Association, Pike Place Market Citizens' Alliance, PONCHO, Tacoma-Pierce County YMCA, the Boys & Girls Clubs, and the Corporate Council for the Arts. We have also provided leaders and volunteers for legal clinics, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), Pierce County chapter of Washington Women Lawyers, Washington Defense Trial Lawyers Association, Washington State Trial Lawyers Association, the Washington State Bar Association, and the American Bar Association.

These and many other organizations benefit from our time and financial commitment. We feel it is our responsibility to support community organizations that affect the quality of life in our communities as well as legal organizations committed to improving access to justice. If we produce solid legal work for our clients and contribute to the profession and the community along the way, then we are doing our job.
