Estate Tax Reform
You have lots to do before the holidays, so we'll keep this short.
1. Estate tax reform is likely. The Wall Street Journal recently commented as follows:
...the chances for complete repeal are extremely remote. But influential members of both parties agree "death taxes" are too high and that fewer people should have to pay them.
2. Sensible family and charitable gifts should continue. The likelihood of estate tax reform makes complicated and strained strategies less attractive. However, those who can afford it should continue to give sensibly to children and charities.
3. Contingency planning remains essential. Estate tax reform won't defeat death and disability. Taxes or no, we each have our legacy to shape. What wishes do we have for our families and our money?
If you'd like to talk further about your estate planning, please call the attorney with whom you work, or Julie Dickens, Al Falk, Alan Macpherson, Eileen Peterson, or Sandy Rovai, all members of our Trusts & Estates Group. Happy holidays.
