In Re Bristol Bay Sockeye Salmon Litigation
For over two decades, our firm has represented one of the largest Japanese seafood processors in a variety of government investigations. In 1995, our client and more than 40 domestic and international seafood firms were sued in Alaska state court. The companies were accused of conspiring to depress the price paid for Bristol Bay sockeye salmon. Plaintiffs were a class of thousands of Bristol Bay fishermen who sought a recovery of approximately $375 million which could have been trebled under Alaska law. After extensive pretrial proceedings and interlocutory appeals, the case went to trial in Anchorage beginning in early February 2003. Our firm played the predominant role in the trial, which lasted until late May 2003. The jury returned a verdict in favor of our client and all other defendants, and we were able to recover a large portion of our client’s fees and costs from settlement funds paid to the class by other defendants. Our firm’s fees were among the lowest of any firm that participated in the trial.
