A class action allows a group of individuals to join their claims in a lawsuit. A court must decide whether the group of cases should proceed as a "class action". If a case proceeds as a class action, each member of the "class" is represented by counsel appointed by the court. Unless an individual expressly asks to be excluded from the class, all members of the class are bound by the results of the case.
