Beck And Connelly Win Award For Injured Skier
James Beck and former GTH attorney Jack Connelly have won a $14 million award for a Washington man rendered a quadriplegic by a poorly constructed ski jump. Beck and Connelly explained to the jury that although Washington law holds skiers responsible for their choice to participate in an inherently risky sport, the law also holds ski resorts responsible for providing reasonably safe facilities. In this case, the owners of the resort had plenty of notice that a jump in a terrain park had an inadequate landing ramp and was improperly placed. Skier Kenny Salvini, 23, landed on the flat area past the ramp and suffered a severe spinal-cord injury. The jury returned a $31 million verdict and determined that the resort was liable for 45 percent, or $14 million, of that award.
