Education Fraud

With large amounts of funding available for education from public programs, some institutions have unlawfully used their students as a vehicle for collecting money.  Such misconduct  may be in violation of specific contracts and may also violate the Consumer Protection Act.  In some cases, private trade and business schools have engaged in fraud and involve complex legal issues.  Such institutions will usually involve major insurance companies in their defense, and be represented by a number of lawyers.  GTH trial lawyers have been leaders in holding institutions accountable for violation of their duties to students.

Representative Cases

  • We represented a class of 28,000 former students of Washington-based Business Computer Training Institute (BCTI) in a class action lawsuit regarding educational services provided by school.  After several years of intense litigation, the case resolved through a settlement of $13.3 million.  Individual payments to class members ranged from approximately $2,600 to $8,100.  The case also resulted in the passage of new legislation aimed at holding private vocational schools accountable.
