John M. Cummings, Senior Associate
  • Endowed with a level of energy and drive that could power a city block, John Cummings rarely slows down. He was born in Butte, Montana, where he joined his first labor union, the Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees Union, while he was still in high school. After receiving his undergraduate degree, magna cum laude, from Gonzaga University, he moved on to Seattle University School of Law, where he began working for the Pierce County district attorney’s office even before he received his J.D., magna cum laude, in 2008.

John spent the next 11 years as a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney in Pierce County, where he put his heart and soul into prosecuting cases on behalf of victims of child abuse, child sexual abuse, elder abuse, and domestic violence. He represented the State in over 100 jury trials and more than 40 briefs to the Courts of Appeals. To no one’s great surprise, he was named Prosecutor of the Year in 2017 by the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department. In 2018, he served as a jury trial consultant on a multi-million-dollar employment discrimination case.  His areas of practice at GTH include Litigation, Employment Law, Personal Injury, Medical Malpractice, and Civil Rights Law.

Passionately invested in anti-racism, anti-misogyny and queer rights causes, John is active in volunteer work and community building in Tacoma. He served for six years on the board of the Rainbow Center Tacoma’s LGBTQ resource center, and he has served as a volunteer at the OASIS Youth Center of Pierce County.

John and his husband Ross enjoy hiking in the Pacific Northwest and traveling whenever they have some free time. Their future travel plans include return trips to Japan and Hawaii, as well as visiting Mexico, where one of John’s three sisters lives, and Ireland, where his ancestors are from. They look forward to becoming foster parents someday. In the meantime, they share their home with two cats: Fluffy, the queen of all she surveys, and Ben.
